This article on punctuation marks on British signs is hilarious (I thought of a certain housematey whilst reading this). Please read and giggle:

(Being a purist myself, I am strongly in favour of keeping the punctuation marks.)

I'm in favour of the apostrophes, too.
I've actually read Lynne Truss's book "Eats, Shoots and Leaves" - twice (because, like her, i'm a total stickler for the apostrophe). Her book is totally hilarious. And she's totally right, of course.
Ah, I've read that too. Because of that book, when I walk down the hall at the ol' schoolhouse and I see a grammatical error on a poster, I fix it.
