Hayden

As many of you know, I tend to worry about former celebrities who stepped out of the limelight (or got shoved). I even check websites such as Whatever Happened To? One celebrity who I worried about was Toronto-based singer/songwriter Hayden. I'm sure most people had heard of his album 'Everything I Longed For' and remember his catchy tune Trees Lounge. But when what happened??

He slipped under my radar for years but has resurfaced with a new album (he's had a few since EILF). He's currently touring for his latest album In Field and Town (which is amazing, download it immediately!) and I was lucky enough to see him play last night.

I can allay your fears by saying Hayden is alive, well, and still doing his thing. When he played Trees Lounge it took me right back to high school when I used to see him play downtown. I remember I first saw him when I was 14 or 15 and my mom had to drive me to the show. He signed my CD and chatted with me for a bit after the show. I could have talked to him this time too but I've stopped talking to 'celebrities' because really...what are you going to say that's interesting that they haven't heard a million times?

The opening act was Cameron McGill and the What Army. These guys were VERY good and I suggest you check out their stuff: http://www.myspace.com/cameronmcgill.

I wish I took a picture to make this post more interesting. Sorry. That is all.

Horrors of Target

I went shopping at Target yesterday for no particular reason (does one need a reason?). A friend remembered that she needed to buy dog food so we browsed the pet isles. I came across something that I hope is only available in America...Halloween costumes for your pet. Check this sick shit out:

Roller Skating Adventures

Today I went roller skating with some friends - not roller blading but roller skating. So retro and fun! At first it was really hard because it's not the same feel as ice skating so it took some time to adjust. In no way can I skate backwards nor turn so I had to keep taking baby steps until I was turned around.

The rink is set up like cosmic bowling - black lights, stars, etc. There were these guys who came alone with their own ipods and, I swear, did their own interpretive dance-style skates around the rink. They looked like professional roller skaters if there is such a thing. One of the employees told me they have roller skating conventions where they do fancy tricks. Take a minute to absorb that.

Things were going well until I started to lose my balance. I tried to move my feet to the side and change direction like you would on skates but wheels don't respond the same way and *whoop whoop whoop* my feet went up in the air and I fell RIGHT on my backbone. The pain was up there with breaking my ankle. I heard a whistle belonging to a person dressed as a referee and everyone literally stopped to stare. One of the pro-skaters (who looked like The Jesus from The Big Lebowski) helped me up. Like a champ, I rolled on.

Dinner Party

Tonight at a dinner party I had the pleasure of meeting a dog named John Crighton. He had a congenital problem with his testicles and was only born with one of them. After he was neutered, his owner decided that he needed to replace that lone testicle with...a neuticle.

For those of you that don't know, neuticles are "testicular implants for dogs" which help "retain his natural look and self-esteem." Upon inspection, I must say the neuticle looked remarkably real and John Crighton appeared to be extremely happy and well adjusted. So that's how I spent my Saturday night...drinking and looking at dog balls. Sorry, ball.

Published!

I had a pleasant surprize today - turns out I'm getting published! I wrote part of a book chapter on spinal cord injury and am actually getting credit. This complements my "no more dicking around" mentality for this semester nicely. Woo for me!

A New Semester Begins

Week 1 of semester 3 has begun. Amazingly, it doesn't seem to be awful! The highlights:

- the wheels are in motion for getting my data published
- we're going to be looking at real brains in one of my classes!
- one prof is the older, maler, grumpier version of me
- my boss will probably keep me around for another year

On the down side, my apartment is overrun with Chicago-style silverfish, which are the smaller version of the amazon-like gigantor creatures that lurk in Canada. I sprayed my apartment thoroughly last night and now everything reeks of "country spring scent" and death. I feel like I've passed through a rite of passage because I actually have to spray them myself and vacuum them up instead of making my mom do it.

On a further down note, I see that we're having an election in October. I was reading on the CBC that 68% of Canadians approve of the cons' approach to climate change. As Marc pointed out, what environmental plan? I thought their plan to deal with climate change was to destroy nature as quickly as possible, namely filling in lakes with waste and not really doing anything about carbon emissions. Despite the fact that they received a failing grade on their climate change report card, Canadians seem to be oblivious to this. Le sigh.

To Do List

One thing I despise about myself is my uncanny ability to lose EVERYTHING. I recently lost a to-do list that was a page long. After hunting all over my apartment, wasting away more of my life, I've decided to put it on my blog so I can't lose it. This is going to be a boring post but...whatever.

1. Create to-do blog CHECK
2. Check schedule to see when last day of class is, then rebook all doctor's appointments (3)
3. Meet with prof about publishing data
4. Wait for response from school to see if they completed form
5. Mail in completed OSAP form
6. Read piles of mail
7. Call RCN and ask why their cable box sucks so bad.
8. Work out
9. Wait for response for scholarship ie: whether there is one
10. Make appointment with bank manager about loan
11. Fix toilet
12. Calculate attrition rates for study
13. Finish SCIRE edits
14. Make turkey dinner
15. Work for boss
16. Get library card

I'm sure there's more, I'm just forgetting everything
